EGGSTRAVAGANZA

Tagged in: school , Clubs

Eggstra, Eggstra, Eggstra!  The Stockbridge Valley Ruritans and the Stockbridge Valley Select Choir are attempting to claim the title for the most plastic eggs dropped and raced down a creek.  This event will be held at the Annual Ruritan Community Fair on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Carlon Field in Munnsville, New York.  Purchase an egg for a chance to win $500!  Eggs are $5 each or 5 eggs for $20.  Plenty of other prizes including gift certificates and donated items will be given away.

Eggs are available at the reception desk of all Utica School of Commerce Campuses, Time for Me Day Spa in Kirkland, Between Us Sisters in Munnsville, St. Patrick’s Thrift Shoppe in Oneida, The Barnyard Swing in Cooperstown, What’s the Scoop in Sylvan Beach, JB’s Small Engine Works in Schuyler as well as special events all around the area.  Look for us at Bike Night, Old Car Night and of course at the Stockbridge Valley Community Fair.  Adopt a racing egg and be a part of this fabulous world record attempt.

The purpose of this event is to help the Stockbridge Valley Select Choir fund a trip to Walt Disney World where they have been invited to sing.   Come, have a good time and help the kids out!

Recently, students attended the 2009 Spring All-County Music Festival. This festival is a wonderful musical experience for the best musicians in all of Madison County. Students were auditioned and then selected to participate in one of many musical ensembles. SVCS students were selected to be in the 9-12 Chorus, 7-8 Chorus, 5-6 Band, 6th Grade Chorus, and 9-12 Band. Mrs. Belanger and Mrs. McCoy were extremely proud of the students for all their hard work preparing for the auditions and then performing in the groups.

During the performance weekend, students practiced Friday night, all day Saturday and then performed in a concert on Saturday afternoon. Families and friends were invited to the concert to experience the musical achievements each ensemble accomplished. Singing or playing in an All-County Festival is the first step in climbing the high school musical ladder. If students are dedicated and talented they could then go on to be selected into the Area All-State groups, then into the All-State, then into the All Eastern, and then into the National ensembles. Last year, Irene Wasnik was selected to perform with the Area All-State 9-12 Chorus. Mrs. Belanger traveled to Oneonta College to hear Irene’s group perform and was blown away by the talent of the group.

The next All-County Festival is in January 2010. Auditions for that festival will be held in October 2009. Mrs. Belanger and Mrs. McCoy are hoping even more students will audition for next year’s ensembles!

Here's a nice article from the Oneida  Dispatch regarding the SVCS Cougars Softball Team and the upcoming season.  (and credit the photo from last year to myhometownsports.com)  if you recall, the Foundation contributed funding to the upcoming "Grand Strand" Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach.

Area softball teams are scheduled to begin the 2009 season this week. If this spring is anything like last year, there's plenty of excitement in store for fans and players alike.

Stockbridge Valley and Canastota return to defend Section III titles while Hamilton will try to get over the hump after finishing second in Section III last year.

Stockbridge Valley will once again rely on the arm of All-State First Team pitcher Cheyenne Bumpus. The junior righty has an all-star catcher in sophomore Marriah Gough and a hard-hitting junior shortstop in Andrea Rogers. Coach Chris Peto (103-34 career, 2002-08) returns a handful of other starters, so a repeat of last year's 22-3 mark is quite possible.

Bri Printup (2B), Nicole Rossi (3B) and the lone senior Breanna Marshall (CF) return as the other starters. The others back are Courtney Yates (1B) are Katie Cosentino (OF). Newcomers Jayme Pokorny (OF) and Teckhya Rood (P) will lend depth to the Cougars lineup.

"We're coming along," Peto said. "It's been nice to get on a field. Seeing four teams before the season started is a nice change of pace.

"The girls are working hard every day."

Strong Math Minds at S.V.C.S.

Congratulations Stockbridge Valley Mathletes!

The S.V.C.S. Mathletics Team came home with a 2nd place trophy earlier this month.  For anyone unfamiliar with Mathletics, students compete at other schools (usually larger schools), solving math problems.  Competitions are held once a month on Saturday mornings.  Think about that...students getting up early on Saturday morning, traveling by bus to other schools to do math.  Not only doing it, but doing it well.

The following students are to be commended for a job well done:  Seelye Clements, Heather Trew, Matt Misiaszek, Brianne Printup, Charlie Wilson, Hilary Trew, Nick Misiaszek, Ryan Thorna, Rob Reeder, Peter Oot, Alyson Wilson, Carolynn Werthman and Mathletics Advisor Mrs. Jeannie McLean.
